Bernard has just received a letter from the Purple Tentacle threatening his life and that of his friends. Thus begins "Return of the Tentacle", an unofficial sequel to the classic "Day of the Tentacle" developed by a group of fans. The result? Brilliant!
If you played Maniac Mansion, you surely also played Day of the Tentacle. Two masterpieces from LucasArts that are now considered cult titles in the graphic adventure genre. And although there was never a third installment, a group of fans got to work and developed "Return of the Tentacle", an unofficial sequel to the classic "Day of the Tentacle". The Purple Tentacle is back and tries to conquer the world and enslave humanity once again. Again Bernard, along with his two friends, Hoagie and Laverne, return to the mansion of the mad scientist Dr. Fred to start the adventure that will put an end to his plans: a time travel to save the world.
Gameplay and interface
Return of the Tentacle is a project that has been in development for a couple of years. Currently the prologue of this adventure is available, accompanied by a brief tutorial to familiarize you with the game's controls. The gameplay maintains the point-and-click style of the previous games with a mechanic that works quite well even without the iconic action toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
In fact, now you have a modern interface where moving the mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen you can see the inventory. And if you move it over objects of interest, the name of the object and the available action are highlighted. As for the technical section, both sound and images are of high quality, with hand-drawn backgrounds and fully animated characters. The team's effort to capture the atmosphere and humor of the classic Day of the Tentacle to bring it to our times is noticeable, preserving dialogues, situations and puzzles that are extremely strange but highly creative.

And the best part is that you can now enjoy the dialogues (voiced in English) with texts translated into Spanish. That said, if you never played Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle, you'd better catch up because this unofficial sequel continues the story directly. Developed by catmic, Return of the Tentacle is available for free download on Windows, Mac and Linux. The game can be executed immediately after you have downloaded the package to your system and extracted the contents of the file. For now, catmic plans to release updates in the future, so we'll be on the lookout as soon as there's news.
