Manually updating each program installed on a computer can defeat even the most patient user, but there are other methods that help us keep software up to date. A while ago we talked about Silent Install Helper, and today we're adding RuckZuck, which besides being very easy to use, has a huge catalog to add programs with just a couple of clicks.

Several programs on my main terminal are demanding attention. Apparently there are new updates, which are suggested with some enthusiasm, but I admit they'll have to wait a bit longer. The magic of multitasking allows updates to run in the background while you keep working. However, the last thing I need mid-session is an error message or a pop-up to confirm secondary steps.

Now, if we hold this situation for a couple of months… what we have in our hands is more than a dozen programs making the same warning, and the simple idea of doing twelve updates by hand causes fatigue on its own. Luckily, there's solid software on our side. Silent Install Helper works well with local installers, and Ninite has several points in its favor, but what brings us here today is RuckZuck (no relation to Kraftwerk).

RuckZuck has three general sections:

  • The first one helps us install new software very easily, thanks to a huge online repository that has information about the latest versions and download links. This repository also has a total of fourteen categories, including audio, security, image editing, compression, and messaging, among others.
  • The second option detects installed software and reports if newer versions exist. With a couple of clicks, RuckZuck opens a PowerShell window, downloads the builds, and performs unattended updates.
  • Finally, the third option lets us create an installer from software already on the computer, ideal for a rare program or a hard-to-get driver.

RuckZuck is fully portable, but still cannot escape two dependencies: the 4.5 edition of the .NET Framework, and the Windows Management Framework 5.0 which updates PowerShell. If the operating system is Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, those dependencies should be covered. Beyond that, RuckZuck is excellent.
