Getting information about your hardware is easy. We've previously seen several compatible applications but at the end of the day they only present high-level data. Now, what if we want to modify values in the background? The process is risky, and requires a huge amount of prior documentation, but if you're willing to experiment, RWEverything is the tool you're looking for.
A look back at 1998-1999
Let's rewind to 1998 or 1999. At that time, AMD had launched its K6-2 processors, compatible with Socket 7 and its Super Socket 7 extension. The market quickly became flooded with very cheap motherboards for these processors, which in many cases had a questionable quality. Their BIOSes came incomplete, had errors, or applied a too conservative configuration, perhaps for stability reasons that were never resolved.
On the other side of the fence were Intel's Pentium II, and frankly, they didn't escape the wave of generic motherboards either. The most extreme users began to explore the hidden performance of their systems with hacked BIOSes, and direct modifications to registers, using programs like the classic WPCREDIT by H.Oda.
RWEverything: a digital scalpel
Although current computers don't suffer from these problems, all low-level parameters are still there, and if you want to access them you can use RWEverything. As its name suggests, RWEverything doesn't just read data, it also allows modification. In other words, it's a digital scalpel. The program obtains registers from the processor and chipset, PCI Express, clock generator, SPD of memories, USB information, and much more. The interface is spartan to the core, and if you expect some kind of tutorial you'll be very disappointed.
Reading data with RWEverything shouldn't cause problems, but you need to proceed with caution when modifying them, because any wrong parameter can cause an immediate hang. In fact, its developer does not recommend using the program on critical systems, but rather experimenting on secondary computers, in addition to obtaining as much documentation as possible about the components. RWEverything has a portable edition, and is compatible with Windows 32 and 64-bit.
