TechSpot’s 51-game comparison found the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 7900 XTX nearly even overall, with the lead changing by game and settings. TechSpot characterized a switch from an RX 7900 XTX to an RX 9070 XT as a sidegrade at best for gaming performance.

What the 51-game average says
TechSpot published its comparison on October 28, 2026. Its combined result used the geometric mean of average frame rates across two quality settings and two resolutions. Most games had less than a 10% performance difference; five exceeded 10%.
The test system used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory and Windows 11 26H2. TechSpot used Adrenalin 26.9.2 for the RX 9070 XT and 26.10.1 for the RX 7900 XTX.
The aggregate is a useful guide to the overall result, but it doesn’t predict which card leads in a particular game. These examples show how much the answer can shift with the title and graphics settings.
Game results depend on the settings
TechSpot’s results include leads for both cards. The percentages below describe the reported advantage in each specific test.
| Game | Test condition | Faster GPU | Reported margin |
| Counter-Strike 2 | 4K, Very High | Radeon RX 7900 XTX | Up to 32% |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 1440p, Maximum RT | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 35% |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 4K, Maximum RT | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 33% |
| Forza Horizon 6 | Extreme preset | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 3% |
| Forza Horizon 6 | Ray tracing enabled | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 23% |
| Fortnite | 4K | Radeon RX 7900 XTX | 18% |
| Monster Hunter Wilds | 4K, High RT | Radeon RX 7900 XTX | Faster in this test; no margin stated |
| Spider-Man 2 | 1440p, Very High | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 9% |
| Spider-Man 2 | 1440p, maximum ray tracing | Radeon RX 9070 XT | 22% |
The Forza Horizon 6 result is a clear example of why the preset matters: the RX 9070 XT’s lead was 3% on Extreme and 23% with ray tracing. Ray tracing, or RT, is a graphics technique that simulates how light interacts with a scene. The RX 9070 XT generally led in TechSpot’s ray-tracing tests, but the RX 7900 XTX was faster in the tested Monster Hunter Wilds 4K High RT configuration.
VRAM and FSR 4.1 set the cards apart
TechSpot identifies the RX 9070 XT as an RDNA 4 card with 16GB of VRAM, and the RX 7900 XTX as an RDNA 3 card with 24GB. That extra memory can matter for UHD texture packs, extreme game settings, large 3D scenes and local AI models that exceed 16GB.
Both cards support FSR 4.1, according to TechSpot, but their processing paths differ. AMD-reported 4K processing times are for upscaling itself, not the total time to render a frame.
| Feature | Radeon RX 9070 XT | Radeon RX 7900 XTX |
| Architecture | RDNA 4 | RDNA 3 |
| VRAM | 16GB | 24GB |
| FSR 4.1 processing | FP8 acceleration; about 1.3 ms at 4K | INT8 processing; about 3.1 ms at 4K |
| Newer FSR features | Supports FSR Redstone machine-learning frame generation and ray regeneration | Lacks some RDNA 4-exclusive FSR Redstone features |
The RX 7900 XTX does support ray tracing, as its results in ray-tracing-enabled games demonstrate. And FSR 4.1 isn’t exclusive to the RX 9070 XT: the difference is in processing and support for newer RDNA 4-specific features.
Does upgrading from an RX 7900 XTX make sense?
For gaming performance alone, TechSpot’s near-tied 51-game result makes the RX 9070 XT a sidegrade at best for someone who already owns an RX 7900 XTX. A buyer who prioritizes the newer FSR Redstone features or gets a different result in a favorite game may weigh those differences separately.
Hardware Unboxed published a separate 51-game comparison on October 26, 2026, and also described overall performance as very similar. Its system used a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an MSI MPG X870E Carbon WiFi motherboard, 32GB of G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB DDR5-6000 CL30 memory and Windows 11.
For the US, TechSpot’s October 28, 2026 article reported the RX 9070 XT at about $900, compared with its $600 MSRP. It separately reported used RX 7900 XTX listings on eBay at $800–$1,100. The first figure is for the RX 9070 XT; the XTX figures are for used listings.
RX 9070 XT partner cards vary by game
A separate TechSpot roundup published July 21, 2025, compared 14 RX 9070 XT models. Sapphire Nitro+, XFX Mercury and ASRock Taichi were among the leaders in the games tested. Sapphire Nitro+ led the cited Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered results; in the cited Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered test, ASRock Taichi, PowerColor Red Devil, Pure and XFX Mercury were within 1% of the leader. The reported 4–6% spread between tested cards applied to the games cited in that roundup, not every game.
