After many rumors, AMD finally announced the launch of the Ryzen 3000 series, based on the 7-nanometer “Zen 2” microarchitecture. The absolute star of the family is the Ryzen 9 3950X, a processor that will bring a total of 16 cores and 32 threads to the AM4 socket. During its official event at E3 2019, the company decided to challenge the limits of that silicon with an impressive overclocking session. The Ryzen 9 3950X reached 5 GHz all-core under liquid nitrogen, and claimed two Cinebench records, defeating Intel processors that cost twice as much.
If for some reason you’ve been away from the hardware world these last few days, then you need to catch up, because AMD turned the market upside down. Between Computex and E3 2019, the company made some high-profile announcements, including the unveiling of the Ryzen 3000 series. The first Zen 2 chips will hit shelves on July 7, with models ranging from the Ryzen 5 3600 (6 cores/12 threads, 3.6/4.2 GHz, $199) to the Ryzen 9 3900X (12 cores/24 threads, 3.8/4.6 GHz, $499). The price-performance ratio is formidable, and everyone agrees that Intel must act soon.
However, the question soon circulated: Where are the 16 cores? AMD preferred to keep the answer for a few days, but it’s already among us: The Ryzen 9 3950X is a beast with 16 cores and 32 threads, 4.7 GHz Turbo, 72 MB of total cache (L2+L3), and $749 on its label. The fastest processor on the AM4 platform will debut two months after its younger siblings, but we already have news on the overclocking front.
Ryzen 9 3950X: 5 GHz All-Core Under LN2
When installed on an MSI MEG X570 GODLIKE motherboard, the Ryzen 9 3950X managed to maintain an overclock of 5 GHz across all its cores (below you can see a CPU-Z screenshot), with a voltage of 1.608V under liquid nitrogen. In that configuration we also detected G.Skill Trident Z Royal DDR4 memory working at a chilling 4533 MHz, with reports of 5100 MHz at 18-21-21-56, although in one of the images they are shown at 4266 MHz with latencies 18-18-18-58 and CR of 1T. Under those conditions, the Ryzen 9 3950X claimed records in Cinebench R15, Cinebench R20, and Geekbench 4. These are the results:
- Cinebench R15: Ryzen 9 3950X with 5,434 points (Previously: Core i9-9960X with 5,320 points)
- Cinebench R20: Ryzen 9 3950X with 12,167 points (Previously: Core i9-7960X with 10,895 points)
- Geekbench 4: Ryzen 9 3950X with 65,499 points (Previously: Core i9-7960X with 60,991 points)
Yes, we agree. LN2 overclocking is not a practical or accessible environment for the vast majority of potential users, but it helps us explore and recognize the most extreme limits that silicon possesses. Also, they are not 5 GHz on 1, 2, 4 or 8 cores: They are 16 cores at once. The 105-watt TDP flies out of proportion easily, and there is a lot of heat to dissipate...
