Google’s K–12 controls let school administrators enable Google Search separately from standalone Gemini services, but Search still includes AI Mode and AI Overviews, according to a later Google clarification. In its November 3 announcement, Google said four services would be off by default for student accounts until administrators explicitly enable them.

What the K–12 controls cover

Google named Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search as the services covered by the default-off policy for K–12 student accounts. The announcement described the planned controls; Google said it would share rollout details in the coming months.

Google later clarified that administrators could enable Search separately from standalone Gemini services. That gives schools a choice about Search access without requiring them to turn on the Gemini app. But the reported clarification said AI Mode and AI Overviews would remain part of school Search, adapted to provide step-by-step Guided Learning. The separate Search setting therefore does not remove AI features from Search.

Where Guided Learning is available

Google said Guided Learning in Classroom was globally available as of November 3, 2026. Teachers can assign activities based on class materials, and Google says the feature provides real-time insights into where students may need support.

Google planned a Guided Learning pilot in Search for selected U.S. schools later in November 2026. It described the feature as step-by-step help for certain homework questions.
