If you're bored at work or at home and your mind drifts back to those hours spent trying to be a pirate or rescuing your girlfriend from a mad scientist, you can now relive those moments thanks to Scumm in HTML5, a site with classic LucasArts graphic adventures to play in your browser.
Classics never die. That's what Finnish developer Jukka Jylänki thought, and he got to work to bring us Scumm in HTML5, a site with classic LucasArts graphic adventures in HTML5 technology. The site lives up to its name; SCUMM is the graphics engine that brought most point-and-click adventures to life, those where you had to click on a word or an element to perform a certain action. The site hosts seven games, which we'll detail below. It's worth noting that they are not complete games, but merely demos to pass the time.
The Secret of Monkey Island (1990)
The title that kicked off the Monkey Island series, considered by many to be one of the greatest graphic adventures in history. The masterpiece by Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman follows the misadventures of Guybrush Threepwood, a young man who dreams of becoming a pirate. To succeed, he must overcome a series of challenges in the form of puzzles that you have to solve. Delirious is an understatement for a game loaded with humor that comes with plenty of entertainment in your goal of becoming a pirate.
Maniac Mansion (1987)
Dave Miller is a college student who is dating Sandy. But when she is kidnapped by Dr. Fred, Dave embarks on a rescue mission with the help of his two friends, breaking into the Edison Mansion. This is how Maniac Mansion begins, with a B-movie plot involving an evil meteor, mad scientists, and two talking tentacles in an adventure that marked a milestone in the genre. And if you liked this first part, you'll love the sequel…
Day of the Tentacle (1993)
The sequel to Maniac Mansion takes place five years after Dave's adventures in the Edison Mansion. Now Day of the Tentacle introduces us to Bernard Bernoulli and his friends, Hoagie and Laverne, as they try to stop the evil Purple Tentacle, who wants to take over the world. The gameplay will take you through a series of puzzles again, but with the twist that you can now travel in time to explore different periods of history.
Sam & Max Hit the Road (1993)
Based on the comic of the same name, Sam & Max Hit the Road follows the adventures of the anthropomorphic dog Sam and the rabbit Max. Both are independent police officers who solve the craziest cases you can imagine. In this first graphic adventure, the duo takes on the case of a missing Bigfoot from a nearby carnival, traveling to many American tourist spots to solve the mystery.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
It's a rule that games based on movies are usually never good. Fortunately, that's not the case with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which follows the plot seen in the film where the archaeologist sets out to find his father, kidnapped by Nazis who are searching for the Holy Grail. Though if you're looking for an original Dr. Jones adventure, you'd better try the next game...
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (1992)
For many, the best Indiana Jones game. This original adventure introduced us to a global search for the legendary sunken city of Atlantis, where Indy is again pursued by Nazis who want to use Atlantis's power for war. A race against time where whoever reaches the mythical city first will decide the fate of the world.
Loom (1990)
Loom is a fantasy adventure that takes place in the distant future. The story begins on the day of Bobbin Threadbare's seventeenth birthday, a young member of the Weavers' Guild who finds himself in the middle of a conflict when the Council of wise weavers turns against him. From then on, he embarks on a journey through various lands governed by different Guilds in order to face Chaos and save his world.
