We are still recovering from the revolution caused by the Xbox One X. With its true 4K support and broader backward compatibility, we estimate there will be strong demand for that hardware, but there is a detail: it only comes with 1 TB of storage. If we consider special services like Xbox Game Pass, that space could run out quickly, but Seagate folks offer a solution with their new Game Drive Hub, an external drive with eight terabytes, designed for the entire Xbox One family.
The Storage Problem
Microsoft has denied from the start any possibility of the user replacing the Xbox One's hard drive. Logically, the web has several tutorials that help us... to "disobey", so to speak, but even with those guides, it's not entirely simple. The direct alternative is to connect external hard drives, as long as we accept the idea of having an additional box next to the console. The point is that games are getting bigger and bigger, and with 4K becoming the norm, it's not far-fetched to imagine titles of 50 GB or more. At the same time, there's Xbox Game Pass, a subscription service that requires downloading and installing games locally. Even with good management, the Xbox One X's terabyte could disappear in record time.
Seagate's Solution: Game Drive Hub
That's when Seagate steps in with its new Game Drive Hub. Its design confirms beyond any doubt that we are looking at a licensed Xbox product, and it can be connected to any member of the Xbox One family. With an eight-terabyte hard drive inside, Seagate estimates that users will be able to install between 150 and 200 games. The interface is USB 3.0, but it also includes a hub, so the user won't lose a port when connecting it. The specifications suggest a maximum speed of 160 megabytes per second, however, it's logical to anticipate that real performance will be a bit lower, especially during installation process.
Color, Warranty, and Price
One of the details I have to mention is the color. Seagate will only offer its Game Drive Hub in white, which goes great with the Xbox One S, but the Xbox One X and the original console are black. The other is nothing less than the warranty. The product's datasheet tells us about one year, when I personally would have preferred 36 months. The Game Drive Hub will hit shelves this month, with a price of 200 dollars.
