Funcom plans to relaunch The Secret World, the cult MMORPG that draws inspiration from the works of H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. Under the name Secret World Legends, this horror online game will now be free-to-play and feature new content.
Released in 2012 for Windows, The Secret World is an MMORPG developed by Funcom where the player joins one of the three secret societies that control the world, attempting to repel, mitigate, or exploit the attack of Lovecraftian entities and other immortal beings on the coast of Maine, Egypt, Transylvania, and a quarantined section of Tokyo. While the game never reached the same level of success as World of Warcraft, its unique supernatural style made it a cult favorite among MMORPG fans. Funcom plans to relaunch the game but under the free-to-play model and rename it as Secret World Legends, a horror and free online game.
This change of direction has two reasons: to capitalize on the recognition of the original game, while the update is aimed at a modern audience. Secret World Legends will launch with the same eight original levels, preserving the creepy and supernatural content of the original MMORPG, along with the rest of the environments, dungeons, and stories from The Secret World. Funcom also plans to create original content for the new game in the near future. All content will be free, though some things will be paid, such as additional character slots and more weapon storage.
An interesting detail is that if you keep investing in The Secret World, you can continue playing it, since the new title will exist on its own server. If you want to start fresh in Secret World Legends, while keeping everything you earned in the first game, there will be a transfer system in place. Secret World Legends is being developed by Funcom and will be available on Windows. The game does not have a concrete release date, but it is expected to arrive on Steam soon.
