How Does It Work?
That padlock is Safe Mode. In this mode, drafts are not saved on any Google server, and the message is encrypted before it's sent. SecureGmail uses symmetric encryption to encrypt and decrypt each message. Encrypting is simple: just enter a password that the recipient knows.
The security of this extension is only as good as your password. If you choose an easy-to-guess password, it will be easy to hack. Fortunately, you can send an email to any Gmail user. It doesn't matter if they don't use SecureGmail; they just need to have you added on Gmail and enter the password to read the message.
Shared knowledge can be a useful and convenient password. Remember to never email your password, to prevent others from intercepting it. SecureGmail works with any Gmail account and can be used with multiple accounts at the same time, whether personal or provided by an organization, school, or business. An interesting detail is that SecureGmail uses a Stanford open-source JavaScript library, also available on GitHub, which allows the community to help identify flaws and verify what the extension is doing.
