I wouldn't change a single pixel of Sonic 2. It's perfect as it is, and I believe the 16-bit art that shapes its world still shines as brightly as ever. Fortunately, not everyone is as conservative as I am—otherwise we'd have missed out on this high-definition remake of Sega's classic! And that would have been a real tragedy.

A High-Definition Homage

Sonic 2 HD is an unofficial fan-made revision of the Sega classic, developed by fans, for fans. It's a project put together by an immense team of professionals united by the mission of updating one of the best games in the franchise—reimagining the original as if it had been built with modern tools and following contemporary standards. This reinterpretation, however, respects everything that made the blue blur great, appearing only to enhance the experience.

Sonic 2 HD brings high-definition graphics, updated sounds and melodies, and even a few tweaks to the physics.

Ready to Play?

The best part? You can start playing this phenomenal remake right now. Just click here to download the demo 2.0, double-click the .exe file, and bam—there it is. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress, so you might run into bugs while playing. If that happens, please help the developers with a detailed report, and we'll all benefit from a better game.

System Requirements

The system requirements are quite steep for a 2D game, so keep that in mind. The recommended specs ask for an Intel Core i5 2500, a graphics card with at least 1GB of VRAM, and 4GB of RAM. If your rig doesn't measure up, you might experience slowdowns when there's too much happening on screen. Let's hope the final version is more polished and a bit more modest in its demands. For comparison, Cuphead requires far less hardware and still juggles a thousand things on screen without a hint of stutter.
