If you miss the classic Sonic adventures and can't stop playing his first games on your beloved Sega Genesis, this news is for you. Sonic is back to explore a re-imagined Green Hill Zone in the new trailers for Sonic Mania.
A Fresh Look at Green Hill Zone
Last year we told you about Sonic Mania, the return of Sonic to 2D in a brand-new adventure. In this game you can play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as you race through completely new zones and classic re-imagined stages, each full of exciting surprises and powerful bosses. This time, a SEGA employee shows us Act 2 of the famous Green Hill Zone from the first Sonic the Hedgehog like never before. This act is essentially brand new, based on the original design.
Also included is Tails accompanying Sonic throughout the level (remember this character made his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 2) and an improved Fire Shield, capable of burning wooden bridges as soon as you run past them. Sonic Mania will run at 60 frames per second; a detail that caused controversy is that the narrator says the original games for Mega Drive ran at 30fps, although that claim is disputed by the YouTube comments below the video. Either way, the game looks quite good, especially if you watch the trailer in its highest quality.
Game Details and Release
Sonic Mania takes place across many levels (each divided into different acts), in which you must guide the character to defeat Dr. Eggman. Each character has unique abilities: Sonic is the fastest and can perform a spin that sends him rolling in any direction, Tails can fly and swim, while Knuckles can glide through the air and climb walls. Sonic Mania is being developed by Headcannon together with PagodaWest Games and will be available on Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game does not have a concrete release date but is expected to arrive during the second quarter of 2017.
