MeriStation reported that Sony ended distribution of its UBP-X700/K, described as the company’s last standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player in Japan, on October 22, 2026.

What changed in Japan

The reported withdrawal concerns Sony’s Japanese player lineup. MeriStation also said Sony’s Japanese store would not replenish the UBP-X700/K and that no successor had been announced.

Sony’s reported sales in other markets

In its October 24, 2026 report, MeriStation said Sony continued selling 4K Blu-ray players in Europe and the United States. That account describes a Japan-specific change, rather than a worldwide withdrawal.

The PlayStation game-disc plan is separate

Sony’s separately reported plan to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games was scheduled to begin in January 2028. It concerns game releases, not the distribution of movie players. NeoTeo previously covered Sony’s plan for new PlayStation game discs.

Why some collectors are concerned

Some Reddit commenters stressed that Sony’s reported change in Japan does not mean Blu-ray players or discs as a whole are ending. Other collectors voiced concern about future player choices. Those comments reflect community worries, not a forecast about the market.
