We have previously talked about projects like Riffusion and MusicLM that enable the generation of music with artificial intelligence, but combining these resources is not exactly a new idea. The portal Soundraw has been around for over three years, and with the help of an algorithm, we can combine a gigantic amount of samples using dozens of themes and genres as reference.
We know that the latest artificial models can create images, transcribe videos, animate drawings, and even manage radio stations, but what about music? Many users believe that this art is still safe from algorithms; however, the truth is that they maintain a closer relationship than they imagine.
Soundraw: Artificial intelligence and samples to create music easily
One of the best examples is Soundraw, a Japanese project that dates back to February 2020. The site uses artificial intelligence, but it doesn't depend on prompts or anything like that. In fact, all the user has to do is select a combination of genres, themes and "moods", as well as tempo and duration.
Soundraw will present a list of songs to explore, but that is just the first step. The songs are divided into blocks with ten-second samples, which we can adjust according to their "energy". The available levels are four (Low, Medium, High and Very High), and the editor also allows us to duplicate or delete blocks at will.
If the general idea of a song pleases us but we are not entirely convinced, the option "Create Similar Music" serves to generate additional remixes. Now, what do we do if we find the exact melody and want to download it? Here is the pressure point of Soundraw: We cannot, or rather, not in the free version. Both the download and the advanced adjustments of tempo, duration and structure of each song require a premium account of 17 dollars per month (with annual billing).
In addition to downloads, the premium plan of Soundraw enables something essential: commercial use, both on the Web and in traditional media (TV, radio). The real question is whether Soundraw manages to justify its price. On one hand, it is extremely easy to use and requires no special software beyond an updated browser.
