History tells us that the first Soviet mechanical television was the B-2, whose production began between 1932 and 1934. The screen measured just 3 by 4 centimeters and required an additional receiver for audio. Seventeen years later, the KVN-49 appeared, the first mass-produced Russian black-and-white television, almost impossible to confuse because of the giant lens placed in front of the tube. Available information suggests that during its eleven years of availability, 2.5 million units were sold, which could only mean one thing: the Soviets had a “hunger” for television.
