"Spider-Man: Far From Home": Trailer and New Characters

Peter Parker and Tom Holland return to the big screen, and this year the bet is double: we'll see the spider in Avengers Endgame and in his own sequel titled "Far From Home", which already has a trailer and official poster. This new Marvel (and Sony) film will open a new phase for the MCU.

There is no doubt that 2019 is a hugely important year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for two reasons. First, this narrative arc enters its final stretch, marking the end for several protagonists after a highly successful decade. The second key point will be the start of Phase 4, precisely with "Spider-Man: Far From Home", which will be followed by "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3" in 2020, so far the only ones confirmed.

The trailer presents a sequel opposite to Homecoming, since everything will happen outside and far from home, more precisely on a trip to Europe. There, Peter tries to get closer to M.J (Zendaya), who had a brief appearance in the previous film.

Despite the fact that several villains were introduced, only one fits to be the most feared of the film. That is Quentin Beck (known in other versions as Daniel Berkhart, Francis Klum), better known as Mysterio. This lethal enemy of Spider-Man debuted in Amazing Spider Man #13 in 1964 and was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. He is a rival who has had several encounters with Peter, although he is also recognized for being part of the Sinister Six, a group of villains led by Octopus that had Electro, Kraven, Mysterio, Sandman and Vulture in its ranks. From this group we already saw Vulture (Michael Keaton) in Homecoming and Mysterio and Sandman are yet to come, so we are probably facing a future confrontation with this evil group.

Mysterio has several powers such as hypnotism, illusionism and the ability to fly, without counting the utility of his suit. His character will be played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

In the trailer we also see a giant water creature, one of sand and one of fire that, despite being presented as villains, Mysterio faces them. A few weeks ago, Jake Gyllenhaal, the actor who will play this villain, made these statements: "Well, there are these threats to the world, the creatures called 'The Elementals', and Mysterio is someone who knows them and wants to make sure the world is safe from them. Nick Fury asks him for help because he's the only one who really understands them and teams up with the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately has to make him become more than a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man"

Following the characters we see in the teaser, initially we can relate the aquatic one to Hydro-Man or Hydron, which is part of "The Elementals", a group of villains that debuted in comics in 1974. Since we already know Mysterio's powers, everything could be illusions, so we can start connecting some ideas.

One of the points to resolve for this film was its release date. Its extreme importance was due to the culmination of Avengers with End Game and Marvel wanted the sequel of the wall-crawler to be released after that event. We suppose that in the middle of the tug-of-war, Sony decided to bring it forward. That is why this film acts as a spoiler since in Avengers Infinity War we see Peter die at Thanos's snap. Although they don't give direct hints, in the trailer we don't see Tony Stark. Instead, Happy appears, who warns Peter that he's alone in this fight. Also joining are Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and, as we know, they were eliminated by Thanos.

Something that does lend itself to confusion is the suit that Peter is seen in, although this could easily be a small trap, as happened with the appearance of Hulk in Infinity War that ultimately didn't appear in the final cut.

The film will be directed by Jon Watts while Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal will be in charge of production. The cast of this film will include Tom Holland (Peter Parker), Jake Gyllenhaal (Mysterio), Zendaya (Michelle Jones), Jacob Batalon (Ned), Marisa Tomei (May), Jon Favreau (Happy), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill).

This sequel arrives at an ideal time although it will be strange to watch it before End Game. The trailer promises and we'll wait for the next trailer to focus on the plot and the new characters. The worldwide release of "Spider-Man: Far From Home" will be on July 5.
