If there is a franchise that has been causing quite a bit of controversy with its movies, it is undoubtedly Star Trek. Just look at the reboot Star Trek (2009) and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), films aimed more toward action than the scientific and philosophical themes the franchise showed us in its television series. They say the third time's the charm, but it seems they haven't learned anything. Just watch the recent trailer for Star Trek Beyond, where the crew of the USS Enterprise has been attacked by a powerful unstoppable wave of unknown aliens, who destroy the ship, leaving them stranded on a new planet where they are in conflict with a ruthless enemy.
A New Director for Star Trek
Ever since J. J. Abrams decided to direct the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many have wondered who would direct Star Trek Beyond. Finally, the baton fell to Justin Lin, a Taiwanese-American film director responsible for directing four films in The Fast and the Furious franchise and some episodes of Community and the second season of True Detective. With this in mind, are we looking at the right director for a Star Trek movie? While Trekkies try to be as optimistic as possible, our best bet is on the new Star Trek series scheduled for January 2017.
Cast and Release Date
Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Commander Spock, along with Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin taking up their respective roles from the previous film. New additions to the cast include Idris Elba (Thor) and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service). Produced by J. J. Abrams, this film will be directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious). Star Trek Beyond will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 22, 2016, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.
