With the imminent release of The Force Awakens on December 18, 2015, the Star Wars universe is pouring out content in every direction. First there was a small teaser from South Korea, and now, official emojis. Yes, I said emojis. No, I'm not crazy. What started as a secret project by Lucasfilm and Disney has now taken full dimensions through 53 emojis based on the two trilogies, The Force Awakens, and Star Wars Rebels.
The evolution of the emoji has taken modern communication systems by storm. The idea of a standard for emoji reproduction is much more complicated than it appears, a detail that led different companies to develop their own solutions. Many users don't enjoy the presence of emojis in their chats, quite the opposite. Those who send them may be anxious to share them, but if all the other side sees is a rectangle with a number inside, they quickly lose their meaning. However, emojis have not only increased in quantity but also in quality. We must add the possibility of turning them into an advertising element, just as has happened with the new official series of Star Wars emojis, another preview of what The Force Awakens will be.
The story behind the emojis
The story of these emojis takes us to artist Truck Torrence, better known as 100% Soft, dedicated to emoji culture, Super Deformed, and everything "kawaii". While presenting his art at an exhibition called Mass Hysteria, the people at Gallery 1888 in Los Angeles decided to contact Lucasfilm after seeing a fabulous piece inspired by Star Wars. The impact was automatic, and Lucasfilm decided that Torrence would work for the company on a special project. The original plan was for attendees at this year's Star Wars Celebration to use the emojis to send tweets, and its success was such that they repeated the same formula at San Diego Comic-Con.
An update for the official app
The final result is an update for the official Star Wars app (which saw the light last July), with a total of 53 emojis based on the main characters, ships, and items from the two trilogies, The Force Awakens, and the popular series Star Wars Rebels. For now, the new emojis are only available for the iOS version, but Android users will receive the update very soon.
