The Strong Museum has just announced the winners of the third wave of titles that will now be permanently displayed in its halls. And one of the winners is Street Fighter II, which has just entered the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The New Inductees
The classic arcade fighter is one of the four games newly arrived to the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The full list of new members includes Donkey Kong, Halo: Combat Evolved, Pokémon Red & Green (original title of the game that may be better known as Pokémon Red & Blue), and Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. The four winners (Red & Green counts as one) emerge as the victors from a list of twelve nominees. The "losers" (Final Fantasy VII, Wii Sports, Windows Solitaire, Mortal Kombat, Portal, Resident Evil, Myst, and Tomb Raider) still have a chance to be inducted in future classes of the Hall of Fame.
The World Video Game Hall of Fame is part of The Strong, the National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. This third wave of newly announced titles spans a period of thirty years in video game history. Regarding Capcom's game, Jeremy Saucier, associate director of the International Center for the History of Electronic Games at the same museum, stated: "Street Fighter II enabled one-on-one battles between human opponents, instantly attracting spectators and generating fierce tournaments in arcades around the world. This community play style revitalized the arcade industry in the 1990s and helped give birth to a generation of fighting games".
A Fighting Game Legacy
Developed by Capcom and released in 1991 for arcade machines, and later adapted to several platforms (including an excellent Flash version and an unofficial adaptation by two fans for the controversial Virtual Boy), Street Fighter II: The World Warrior now joins an illustrious list of all-time favorite games including Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, Grand Theft Auto III, The Sims, Doom, Pong, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., Space Invaders, Tetris, and World of Warcraft.
