Popcorn Time is wrapping itself in doubt. It is increasingly complicated to download "clean" clients, accusations between projects are the order of the day, and users must move by pure instinct… but we must not forget that Popcorn Time is just one option. Another that has gained some relevance in recent months is Stremio, a service that seeks to go far beyond Popcorn Time, even offering television channels and legal streaming sources.
A quick visit to Reddit and the multiple forums devoted to Popcorn Time is enough to conclude that its situation is chaos. Nobody knows whom to trust, suspicions about infected clients hang in the air, and of course there is also a clash of egos among those responsible for each project, which obviously benefits no one. Beyond the announcements about an online version and streaming support on some indexes, perhaps it is time to ask if it is worth staying in the territory of Popcorn Time. Many have returned to their traditional BitTorrent clients, downloading content through Magnet links, but other options have also emerged. One of them is Stremio.
Technically, Stremio precedes Popcorn Time, but it adopted its current name last year. Unlike Popcorn Time, Stremio presents itself as an "entertainment center" based on add-ons, so that it can expand its functionality far beyond BitTorrent streaming. The current Stremio client offers YouTube videos, online television channels, and access to legal streaming services like Amazon. Stremio's add-on with the "eye patch", so to speak, is known as "Juan Carlos Torrents", but if we go by the developers' words, this and other similar add-ons will have to be manually activated by the user in future builds.
What else can I say about Stremio? I downloaded a copy, which is actually a simple launcher (which includes an optional "offer") for its real installer. Its interface is very interesting, with additional information on each movie and series, but overall performance was lower than expected, and several streams returned errors. It is estimated that a new version of the client will arrive soon, however, those interested can get the betas in advance here.
