Summer Lesson, the virtual reality game for Project Morpheus that lets you interact with a schoolgirl, was showcased at this year's E3 2015. A new demo was presented, and here's what happened.
Backstory and Controversy
Last year we told you about Summer Lesson, the virtual reality game by Katsuhiro Harada (creator of Tekken) for Project Morpheus, where you can study with a schoolgirl and even fall in love. In Japan, these types of games are known as "waifu" and have already caused some controversy regarding sexual content. It's worth noting that the game is not pornographic (there are no nudity, in fact), but it's a strong indicator of how sex will be sold in virtual reality. To calm the waters a bit, at this year's E3 2015 we saw a new demo of Summer Lesson at Sony's booth.
The Summer Lesson demo transports you to the porch of a traditional Japanese house on a beach, with a pleasant summer breeze. Your companion is a beautiful blonde young woman who asks if you can be her sensei (teacher) to teach her some Japanese or enjoy a music lesson. The interactions when communicating with her are many and variable. At the end of the demo, a strange man appears, none other than Katsuhiro Harada himself, announcing that he is the film director and congratulating you on your performance.
A Twist: It's All a Movie Set
What does this mean? Apparently everything is part of a setup for a movie scene. The blonde young woman, whom one would think is a minor, is actually an adult actress. In short, a way of saying that the player shouldn't feel shame or guilt when interacting with her. Why is this? After the first Summer Lesson demo, several Japanese players responded with things like "I don't want anyone to see me playing this game" and "I think I'm in love". Yes, Japanese people can be very strange in these situations.
Graphically, the game looks quite good thanks to the Unreal Engine 4, and it's produced by Namco Bandai. Summer Lesson is being developed by TEKKEN Project and will be available on Project Morpheus for PlayStation 4. For now, the game doesn't have a concrete release date.
