There's no doubt that Mario's adventures are spectacular, even though they're reserved for a single player. But that changes now with a group of fans presenting Super Mario 64 Online, the Nintendo 64 classic for PC, free and with online multiplayer.
Super Mario 64 wasn't designed to be played cooperatively, nor was it designed to be played on PC. Yet, thanks to the magic of emulation and modding, a group of fans presents Super Mario 64 Online, the Nintendo 64 classic for PC, free and with online multiplayer. This online version of the game is built from a ROM of Super Mario 64 and lets you play with a roster of characters that extends far beyond the Mario brothers, each with unique powers and abilities. Among the new playable heroes in Super Mario 64 Online are Waluigi, capable of traversing steep slopes; Princess Peach, who can float for long periods in the air; and Princess Rosalina, someone who makes a solid transition to the graphics of the 64-bit era.
As for multiplayer mode, there's not much to add beyond playing the adventure cooperatively. If you want, you can challenge your friends to impromptu races, I suppose, but this mod really just adds the functionality and lets you figure out how you'd like to approach its features. There are currently plenty of servers available, and it seems Super Mario 64 Online has an active and growing player base. Although as always happens in these cases, the fear is that copyright claims are on the way, so take advantage and download it before it's too late. Released in 1996 for Nintendo 64 and later adapted for iQue Player, Super Mario 64 introduced us for the first time to a 3D world in the franchise where Mario has to traverse Princess Peach's castle and rescue her from Bowser's clutches.
