A Fan-Made Level Editor

In late 2015, Nintendo released Super Mario Maker, its most creative title yet for the Wii U. The incredible range of level-editing tools not only inspired countless programmers around the world, but also brought a multitude of new levels to the Mushroom Kingdom. Although unofficially, the Nintendo 64 is about to get the same treatment through the recently released Super Mario 64 Maker, a Super Mario level creator.

Super Mario 64 Maker is a game for creating levels that is already available as a ROM for download for PC and that you can play through an emulator (like Project 64). You download it, open it, and start creating levels. The game aims to give interested players a decent level editor to create their own 3D worlds. When you boot the ROM, you are greeted by a new title screen and then immediately taken to an empty scene awaiting your command.

Here you can place objects in the world using the same camera viewpoints used to play the game, and you can drop just about anything there, from enemies to different pieces of terrain and backgrounds (and you can resize many of those things). Obviously it's not as fast or as polished as Super Mario Maker (a professional product made by Nintendo), but considering this is a fan creation by Kaze Emanuar and what he had to work with, it's incredible what he has achieved. Several levels created with Super Mario 64 Maker have already been shared online.

You can join the community to share your levels or ask about the editor by checking the video descriptions, where you will also find some tips regarding emulator configuration.
