With an average of 150 million units sold, the Nintendo Switch is very close to becoming the most popular console in history. However, the original models date back to March 2017, meaning there are many worn-out consoles out there. Getting replacement shells isn't that complicated, but there's another possibility: "consolizing" the Switch with a mod like the Switch NXii. Tito from the channel Macho Nacho Productions got his hands on one of these kits and shared the full installation process.
Some users might wonder what the point is of removing the portable factor from a console to turn it into a fixed unit. That simply opens up new possibilities: Many consoles end up in very poor condition, and an alternative shell can extend their lifespan without much trouble. Other factors also come into play, such as temperature, and in the specific case of the Nintendo Switch, "overclocking" to stabilize its framerate.
Why do I say "overclocking" in quotes? Because the Switch comes with a factory underclock. Through "consolization", the Tegra X1 processor can finally stretch its legs, but this requires a kit whose installation isn't traumatic. Tito from Macho Nacho Productions offers us an option: The second revision of the Switch NXii, created by SetEngineering.
Switch NXii: Unlocking the Nintendo Switch's Full Potential
One of the main goals of this mod is to drastically optimize the cooling of the Nintendo Switch, to the point where its SoC manages to maintain the same temperature as the standard configuration, but while "overclocking". This is made possible with a 92mm Noctua fan and a speed controller (which didn't exist in the previous edition). The kit comes with its own custom PCBs to reduce installation difficulty to the absolute minimum. In fact, you don't need a soldering iron or glue: A set of screwdrivers is more than enough.
Although it may seem hard to believe, the most complicated part is preparing to install the mod, but Tito shows us the entire process in great detail. Essentially, you need to be careful when "threading" cables through certain holes and navigating the storm of screws. The Switch NXii doesn't remove the battery or the Switch's original cooler, but both components have dedicated spots for quick integration. The same goes for the dock's PCBs.
The final result is excellent, and as if that weren't enough, the kit also extends its compatibility to the Switch's OLED model. What about prices? The fanless version of the Switch NXii is a step above 113 euros, or 131 euros if we decide to include the Noctua fan in the package, while the vertical stand costs 18 euros.
