Bandai has just put back on sale the original version of the pocket game that drove 90s kids crazy. Yes, the Tamagotchi are back! You can again carry your virtual pet in your pocket, just like in the 90s.
A trip back to the 90s
Launched in 1996, the Tamagotchi is a virtual pet created in Japan by Aki Maita and marketed by Bandai. The game starts with an egg that hatches into a pet that players must care for through tasks such as feeding it and cleaning its droppings, for the player's own entertainment. The pet could even be disciplined if it misbehaved, and could also call your attention by making noise so you would attend to it. If one was careless, the pet would die quickly. It was a worldwide success with more than 76 million units sold, quickly becoming one of the biggest toy crazes of the 1990s and early 2000s. In fact, the toy was so addictive that it was banned in some schools... and now it's back. The Tamagotchi are back! You can again carry your virtual pet in your pocket, just like in the 90s.

Bandai has just re-released the original version of the pocket game in egg form with the six original characters. This cult game retains its retro low-resolution graphics, the same care mechanics (navigating the menu with the three buttons of the electronic device), and it comes in the form of six differently colored eggs newly designed. The only difference is that in terms of size it is smaller than the original design launched in 1996. Its potential return triggered a wave of nostalgia on social media, with several users sharing their experiences with virtual pets. In the last twenty years, different versions of the Tamagotchi have been released, including video games and arcade machines. However, this is the first re-release of the original Tamagotchi.
It is now available for purchase on Amazon Japan for 2,000 yen (approximately 18 dollars).
