Tesla says Optimus production began on its high-volume lines in Fremont, California, during Q3 2026. On Tesla’s October 21 earnings call, CEO Elon Musk forecast deliveries to companies outside Tesla around the end of 2027, with industrial uses expected first. The forecast concerns business deliveries, not a household launch date.

Production has begun, but the ramp is early

Tesla calls the Fremont robots its first production-quality Optimus units and classifies the California operation as an early ramp. Musk also described production as being at an early stage. The start of production is a company-reported milestone, not a statement that the factory has reached its target output.

The late-2027 forecast is for companies

DPCcars summarizes Tesla’s stated Optimus production plans and Musk’s delivery forecast.

Musk said Tesla expects to deliver Optimus to companies outside the company around the end of 2027. He pointed to industrial work, including dangerous or repetitive tasks and jobs that may need to be done around the clock, as likely early uses. That forecast does not set a date for household sales.

The 20,000-a-week figure is a future target

Musk said Fremont could take at least a year, and possibly longer, to reach an annualized rate of 20,000 robots per week. That is a future production target, not the current output. He said most of the equipment for a line designed around one million robots a year had arrived in Fremont; the equipment statement does not mean that rate has been achieved.

Training and development remain part of the plan

Musk said Tesla was building an Optimus Academy where robots could practice tasks and generate training data through self-play. He estimated Tesla would need roughly 10,000 to 20,000 robots for that training work. The estimate describes a training fleet, not customer demand.

Musk also said Optimus still needs work on design, safety, reliability and durability, and that its AI needs further development before it can handle open-ended tasks usefully. He identified the hands and fingers as difficult hardware challenges. NeoTeo previously covered reported concerns about Optimus’s hands and suppliers.

Musk said Tesla planned to integrate its AI5 chip into Optimus around April 2027, if the plan proceeded as expected. He also described a future video intended to show tasks that were not preprogrammed, which he expected in about a month or two.
