Now, I am the first to admit that installing an antivirus consumes additional resources, and that devices with more modest specifications do not usually receive these solutions with open arms, but if you are convinced that you need to improve security on your tablet or smartphone and you have adequate firepower, you should take a look at four of the best Android antivirus apps, developed by well-known companies.
Best Android antivirus: Malwarebytes
Installing Malwarebytes goes directly into a 30-day trial of its Premium version, and it shares anonymous data with the developer, but this can be disabled without fuss. Its control panel shows the overall status of the device, while the security audit is responsible for identifying the most serious issues in its configuration (for example, the lack of a PIN or pattern).
We can also manage or delete applications from its interface, and its Scan section allows us to define scanning operations on device reboot, or immediately after updating its database. Another interesting aspect of Malwarebytes is its privacy checker, which reports all permissions requested by applications.
ESET Mobile Security
The first thing that stands out about ESET is that the vast majority of its modules are exclusive to the premium version, and at the same time that makes it one of the simplest options. The antivirus module has an advanced section where we can modify the depth of its analysis, real-time protection, the LiveGrid system for detecting emerging threats, its behavior with removable drives (microSD cards, OTG pendrives, etc.), and the update server to receive final or beta versions.
The activity log is basic but functional. It is in the security report where we find the most relevant details, although they are not too extensive in the free edition. Beyond ESET's obvious desire to turn us into premium users, real-time protection and manual antivirus operation point in the right direction, and it doesn't annoy (much) with pop-ups.
Bitdefender Mobile Security & Antivirus
As expected, Bitdefender aims to offer a complete protection package. The antivirus is just one of its functions. We also see components such as VPN, an anti-theft system, an online account analyzer, and a lock control for installed apps. The fraud alert system is responsible for analyzing SMS messages and notifications in order to detect malicious links, ignoring the rest of the content for logical privacy reasons.

The app shares reports automatically (they can be deactivated), and enables a 14-day trial. To access only the free antivirus, it is necessary to install another application.
Avira
Avira starts in free mode, but its interface offers a seven-day trial to access Prime features. Once again, the antivirus is just one among several available tools, such as anti-theft, identity protection, and a free VPN. Network Scanner helps us detect devices on our network (very useful for detecting if your WiFi is being stolen), the permission manager analyzes everything the apps have asked for, and the Optimizer studies aspects such as RAM and available storage.
The Avira interface is compatible with dark mode, and although we don't need to create an account to start using it, the app recommends it. Everything belonging to the Prime edition is highlighted with a small star, including web protection, camera protection, and microphone protection.

There is no point in denying it. All Android antivirus apps want you to use their premium versions, all require or strongly request the creation of an account, and all collect information/telemetry in one way or another.
