At the time of its debut in 1982, the Commodore 64 cost $595. Three years later it had dropped to $149, and that, combined with the wide availability of software and accessories, made it one of the most popular home computers in history. The machine was so sought after that there are no official sales figures, but what we do have is a huge collection of images showing users playing and working on their Commodore 64.
My first and only Commodore 64 arrived at home in a traumatic way. We had originally received a strange clone based on an MSX system that could barely run software because of a lack of RAM, and after making a scene at the store (and paying a little extra money), the computer ended up in my hands. I never had access to the 1541: Load, Press Play On Tape, and wait for the datasette to do its job. It was glory for me… and also for millions of users around the world. Some sources say 12 million Commodore 64 were sold. Others put that number at 17 million. We've hacked it to death, brought it back from the dead, and used it in the strangest environments.
