Optical illusions! Strange patterns, movements that seem impossible, colors that change by magic, eyes and brains that don't agree. Experts surprise us year after year with new developments, and the Best Illusion of the Year competition celebrates them. Below we share the Top 10, starting with the three winners of 2019.
Some see extra colors and others don't. Most people still believe that damn dress is white and gold. That's not something we can really control, and maybe that's the most important factor of an optical illusion: It doesn't work the same way for all people. Would you like to see new examples? Today we will see the three best illusions of the year, followed by the rest of the Top 10, which in my opinion has no waste. Among them we discover games with mirrors, special figures, rotation tricks, three-dimensional graffiti, and much more. On certain occasions, the public vote was not as generous, but I think they all deserve to have been declared the best of the year.

First Prize: Double Axis Illusion
Does the pattern rotate on the horizontal axis, or vertical? Does it follow the clock's movement, or go the other way? The visual cues only deepen the illusion. (Frank Force, United States)
Second Prize: Color Change
Depending on how you perceive the movement of the dots, their color changes. If they move 'downwards', the dots are red and green, but if they move 'to the right', they become yellow. The illusion suggests that in color perception there is something more than a limitation in the temporal resolution of the visual system. (Haruaki Fukuda, University of Tokyo, Japan)
Third Prize: Rotating Circles Illusion
No matter what happens or where you place it, it follows the white dot. That will make the center circle 'change' its behavior (following vertical, horizontal, and even triangular patterns), when all it does is rotate. (Ryan E.B.
