Stack Overflow Developer Survey: To Begin
- Almost 60 percent of the more than 80,000 participants learned to program using online resources. Younger developers took advantage of courses, forums and other online tools, while older developers developed their skills with traditional means (physical books and institutions).

The Best-Paid Programming Languages in 2021, According to Stack Overflow
- Make way for Clojure, a dialect of the Lisp language on the Java platform, created by Rich Hickey in 2007. The average gross annual salary (including bonuses, without taxes or deductions) for a Clojure developer is $95,000, followed not far behind by F# ($81,037) and Elixir (one of the languages used in Discord), which shares third place with Erlang paying $80,077.
- The Top 10 best-paid programming languages does not go below $75,000 annually.
- The list includes somewhat more controversial examples like SQL and HTML/CSS (linked to the endless debate about whether they are languages or not), but the average salary for both is very good, with $56,228 and $52,980 respectively.
- JavaScript, HTML/CSS, SQL and Python are the languages with the highest participation in this category of the survey.
Age of Learning and Years of Experience
Another very interesting aspect of the survey is the age at which participants wrote their first lines of code. Without much of a surprise, more than 50 percent dipped their toes into the waters of programming when they were between 11 and 17 years old, while only 7.66 percent covers the 25-and-over age group.
To conclude, 50 percent of respondents have been writing code for less than a decade. The average is higher in the United Kingdom and the United States (16.3 and 15.7 years respectively), with India closing the other end of the Top 10 (7.64 years).
