A while back we explored several of the steps involved in building a pinball, but if there is one thing that deserves a chapter of its own, it’s the art. Both the table itself and the score displays were (and still are!) true canvases for a handful of very talented people who not only reproduce the game’s theme perfectly, but amplify it with every detail. The Physical Connection
Moving levers, turning wheels, pressing pedals… arcade machines demand our money, but also a bit of our physical effort. Today the relationship is limited to picking up a gamepad or using the keyboard-mouse combo, but back then there was a stance, an effort, a different attitude when playing. That was especially true with pinballs.
Waiting for exact combinations, calculating the shot with the flippers, nudging the table just enough to avoid the "tilt"… those are all good memories, but we can't ignore the art of those machines. Some pinballs are a feast for our eyes, to the point that pictures don't do them justice. Don't forget to seek out their lights and sounds. Pinballs are slowly coming back, and it's up to us that they don't leave again.
