The Small World in Motion competition organized by Nikon celebrates the best of time-lapse photography and video captured through a microscope. Visual impact is the most important factor, but technical skill, the quality of shared information, and originality are also considered when choosing the winners. The 2018 edition brought together true masters of microphotography, and today we're sharing the winners.
A water flea giving birth. A laser beam crossing a soap membrane. Microorganisms feeding. Soy sauce evaporating. How many things hide from our eyes? How many festivals of color and movement are waiting for us? The veil is lifted when we look through the microscope, but that is a personal experience. Enthusiasts of microphotography seek to share this magic with the whole world, and that's where Nikon's Small World in Motion competition comes in.
Originally organized in 2011, Small World in Motion has simple rules: Only optical microscopes may be used, macro photography is prohibited, the use of Nikon equipment is not mandatory, videos must not exceed 60 seconds, and no sound or post-editing is allowed.
