The Chinese Room Thought Experiment

The Chinese room is a thought experiment, popularized by Roger Penrose, that attempts to refute the validity of the Turing test while also proposing that a machine cannot truly think. It exposes the difference between recognizing syntax and understanding semantics, proposing that a closed room with a mechanism equipped with enough rules can pass for a person. But does that system have any kind of consciousness or mind? The experiment posits that the human mind does not function like a computer program, nor can a computer program be a mind. About 100 years ago, even Einstein mentioned that his brain was an excellent laboratory, where he could carry out the most audacious experiments without any limitation. The Chinese room is a thought experiment of this kind, originally proposed by philosopher John Searle and later popularized by physicist and mathematician Roger Penrose. Searle's aim is nothing less than to shatter the idea that our mind is similar to a computer program. The Chinese room seeks to show us that a machine can perform an action without understanding what it does or why. The logic used by computers simply operates with symbols without comprehending their true content, a process completely different from what (we believe) happens in human beings.

Suppose we manage to build a machine the size of a room, apparently capable of understanding the Chinese language, which works as follows: when it receives Chinese texts as input, it performs an internal process and emits a coherent text in Chinese as output. Such a machine could easily pass the Turing test, since it could convince any Chinese speaker that it understands their language.

Searle proposes that we imagine that, instead of a mechanism, inside the room there is a person who has not the slightest idea of the Chinese language. The person is completely isolated from the outside, except for a slot through which sheets of paper with Chinese texts enter and leave. The person has at their disposal a series of manuals and dictionaries that indicate the rules relating input Chinese characters to those they must write as output. Basically, a series of premises like 'if such characters come in, write such others'. Outside this room is the same Chinese person who believed the hypothetical computer mentioned earlier understood their language.

Searle explains that the Chinese room has the ability to make the person interacting with it believe it understands the Chinese language, even though the person inside has never spoken or read that language. At this point, we can raise some rather thorny questions. How can the operator respond if they do not understand Chinese? Are the manuals and dictionaries the ones that know Chinese? Is it the whole system (room, operator, and dictionaries) that understands Chinese?

Searle and Penrose say that advocates of strong artificial intelligence—those who defend the position that a computer program will eventually understand natural language and possess properties of the human mind (not merely simulate them)—must admit that either the room understands Chinese, or passing the Turing test is not sufficient proof of intelligence. Since none of the components of the experiment understands Chinese, its creators argue that even if the whole system can pass the Turing test, we cannot say that the person (or computer) inside the room understands Chinese.

This reasoning, which has no evident flaws, directly attacks the idea that our mind is similar to a computer program. Advocates of strong artificial intelligence maintain that our mind works exactly like a computer program, and that our brain is nothing more than a biological computer. The mind, in this paradigm, would be to the brain what a program is to the computer. In this scheme, a computer suitably programmed to simulate human intelligence (like the one inside the Chinese room) is not only a simulation of intelligence but is intelligence.

For advocates of strong AI, digital computers can have a mind. Searle, on the contrary, believes that even though a computer can perform operations in a completely formal way, expressed in terms of abstract symbols (ones and zeros, Chinese texts, etc.), it has not the faintest idea of what it is doing. For the computer, these symbols refer to nothing; they have no meaning, no semantic content, and the machine has no consciousness of itself.

Searle drives a stake into the very heart of Artificial Intelligence. Our mental states, he argues, do have semantic content (beyond any formal features they might have). When our thoughts are about something—a walk on the beach or a dinner—they have not only form but also content, or in other words, not only syntax but also semantics. Searle summarizes it in a sentence: Syntax alone is not sufficient for semantics, and digital computers, insofar as they are computers, have, by definition, only syntax. Amen.

The man inside the Chinese room knows only the syntax of the language. He is completely unaware of the content of the messages. The programmers outside the room feed questions and the person inside outputs valid responses, thanks to their dictionaries and manuals. To those outside, the room is an expert in Chinese. But the reality is that whoever is inside—whether the man or the mechanism from the first case—has no idea of the meaning of those scribbles they read and write.

What is the importance of the Chinese room? It is that manipulating symbols based on their form (syntax) does not mean we know their semantic content. Searle's argument, if valid, represents a hard blow to artificial intelligence. It means nothing less than that it is impossible to create real intelligence through computer programs. We can simulate as much as we want, and deceive ourselves into believing that intelligence exists within the machine. But regardless of the technological progress we achieve, a machine that applies rules will be nothing other than the Chinese room, and therefore incapable of having consciousness.

Moreover, those who defend the point of view of strong Artificial Intelligence are, in a way, saying that humans are also simply a Chinese room full of rules. If they are right, we deceive ourselves in a dreadful way: we believe we have consciousness, we assume that we know and understand reality, when in reality we are like the computer that thinks it knows Chinese.

How does the man know that he knows? Or, deeper still, why does the man know that he exists? All the stimuli we receive from seeing, touching, smelling, or hearing can be simulated by appropriate methods in a computer, so we cannot use that to establish a difference. If Searle and Penrose are wrong, we are no different from a machine full of rules. If they are right, we have something that makes us distinct and that a computer can never possess.
