The coldest places in the world: The Top 3
East Antarctic Plateau: -93.2°C
In 2013, an advanced analysis of satellite data revealed the presence of "cold air pockets" between the Fuji Dome (Dome F) and Argus Dome (Dome A) that recorded a temperature of -93.2 degrees Celsius. But a second analysis of the same data set with updated parameters indicated that under ideal conditions, those pockets could reach a chilling -100°C. This would be the lowest possible natural temperature on the entire planet.
Vostok Station, Antarctica: -89.2°C
For many sources, it is the true "pole of cold" and absolute record of cold on Earth. On July 21, 1983, Vostok Station (built by the Soviets in December 1957) recorded -89.2 degrees Celsius, and several sources highlight the consistency of its measurements. In December, the station receives 22.9 hours of light, while during the polar night, its light record is zero hours per month. Many things have happened there, including an assassination attempt over a chess game.
Amundsen-Scott Station: -82.8°C
Three out of three for the Antarctic continent, and the podium closes with the measurement taken at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, which the United States built in 1956, very close to the geographic South Pole. The base is located at 2,835 meters above sea level, and its structure underwent multiple modifications over the decades, but on June 23, 1982, its equipment measured -82.8 degrees Celsius. Its most generous summer never exceeded -12.3°C. In short: Very cold.
