In early 1984, a computer magazine called Računari appeared in what was then Yugoslavia. Its name translates directly to “Computers.” It wasn't limited to a single platform like other publications, and its technical content was solid. But what really set it apart was its liberal use of cover girls. The web has preserved some of those covers, and today we're sharing them.

A Brief History of Računari

The story of Računari requires a brief pause. The magazine began its run in 1984, four years after Tito's death, and ended in the late 1990s. It had almost no interruptions, aside from occasional issues that combined two months into one. That simple detail makes it an extraordinary project, because Yugoslavia in the late '80s and early '90s was not one of the most stable regions in the world.

In other words, Računari survived the fragmentation of Yugoslavia, the ethnic tensions, and the half-dozen armed conflicts that devastated everything. Its editors found a way to keep going despite the chaos, and they didn't hesitate to bring their full firepower to the covers, with models who definitely captured readers' attention.

Editor's note: May 1991. A month before Croatia and Slovenia declared their independence. The whole region blew up, but the publication survived.
