Sooner or later, we all have trouble sleeping. Too many activities, too much stress during the day, anxiety… there are many things that keep you away from bed. But in the halls of the Foundation there is another possibility, darker and more twisted. Maybe… you are prey. There is something hunting you, and it is more patient than you imagine. The worst part is that you can't see it clearly, and at times you think it's a vision caused by your lack of rest. SCP-966 bets on your fatigue, on the deterioration of your mind. And once you fall exhausted… it's too late.
Containment and Special Orders
The Foundation has issued special orders regarding SCP-966. Its threat is so great and immediate that two of its mobile task forces remain on constant alert to locate and neutralize any active instance among the general public. Even so, the Foundation keeps a total of four specimens, three males and one female. All are kept in a 10 by 10 meter room, made of metal and covered with lead. Two infrared security cameras monitor their movements, and their diet is meat, 20 kilos per instance each month. Occasionally, the female specimen of SCP-966 has offspring. The Foundation's orders in this regard are blunt: separate from the mother, conduct studies, and eliminate before it reaches maturity.
Appearance and Abilities
I understand that may seem repugnant, but SCP-966 is too dangerous to allow its multiplication. SCP-966's appearance is disturbing, with an elongated face, needle-like teeth, and claws on its fingers that reach 20 centimeters. Physically it is not very strong. It weighs only 30 kilograms, its muscles and skeletal system are weak, it never exceeds 1.6 meters in height, and its claws break easily. SCP-966 has never been seen sleeping. It only stays still for three to five minutes at random intervals. But don't be fooled: its lack of physical strength is offset by two properties. The first is that SCP-966 can only be seen in the infrared part of the spectrum, between 700 and 900 nanometers. By burning its skin and tissues (with damage equivalent to second or third degree burns) it is possible to observe it in the visible spectrum. And the second… is how it hunts.
SCP-966 prefers prey of medium to large size, and humans are on the menu. In fact, its attack method seems to have evolved especially for us. SCP-966 emits a wave with a maximum range of 20 meters, which blocks entry to the two basic states of sleep (REM and NREM), as well as microsleeps. In other words, it doesn't let you sleep. Ever. All attempts by the Foundation to make SCP-966's prey rest have failed. Once the victim loses the ability to sleep, SCP-966 will begin to stalk it until the lack of rest makes it collapse. If necessary, SCP-966 will make threatening noises or physically attack its prey to accelerate the deterioration process. At that point… SCP-966 will eat it alive.
The Foundation first discovered SCP-966 at some point in the 20th century (the exact date is classified), and since then it has managed to drastically reduce its numbers, but some specimens remain out there. If you have trouble sleeping, maybe you have one nearby… very close.
