When I say the word "kawaii", you probably already have a picture in your mind. A lot of pink/tutti frutti, small adorable animals, Super Deformed characters, maid cafés… the list goes on. However, when you come across the art of GENk, that conventional view quickly falls behind. In fact, kawaii is just one element within a complex equation formed by blood, darkness, and desperation. First thing that came to my mind when studying these images was American McGee's Alice (almost impossible to get digitally) and its sequel Madness Returns (only on Origin). Bloody 'dolls,' grimaces of pain, twisted horror, and a hint of psychopathy seem to touch GENk illustrations, who has mentioned Yasushi Nirasawa and Trevor Brown as sources of inspiration. We also find the occasional tribute to real-life actresses, books (The Girl with Dragon Tattoo), adult actresses (Ichigo Aoi), anime series (Yuri on Ice), and more.
