A floppy disk, also known as a diskette, is a magnetic data storage medium. It consists of a flexible circular magnetic sheet, a fabric lining for protection, and a rigid plastic outer cover. When inserted into a drive, a flap opens to allow an electromagnetic coil to read and write data, and a write-protect tab controls whether the disk can be recorded. The device that reads and writes these disks is called a Floppy Disk Drive (FDD).
The History of the Floppy Disk
The floppy disk was developed by IBM in 1967. The company’s project team, led by Alan Shugart with David Noble as a principal researcher, aimed to create a flexible 8-inch medium to store firmware in its mainframes. The internal success was so remarkable that in 1971 IBM launched the 8-inch floppy disk to the public market.
The first model, the IBM 23FD 8-inch diskette, was a read-only device with very limited capacity. As the diskette gained popularity, many personal computers began to include a floppy disk drive, including the Apple II, Macintosh, MSX 2/2+/Turbo R, Amstrad PCW, Amstrad CPC 664, 6128, and 464, ZX Spectrum +3, Commodore 64, Amiga, and IBM PC, among others.
The device that reads and writes these disks is known as the Floppy Disk Drive (FDD).
After several 8-inch models, 5 ¼-inch diskettes came to market, using the same technology but in popular versions like DS/DD with 360 KiB and HD (High Density) with 1200 KiB. Later, 3 ½-inch Extra Density diskettes offered 2.88 MB. More than 22 formats were introduced since 1971, and the floppy disk was discontinued in 2000.
The Impact of the Floppy Disk
The video game industry also benefited from the floppy disk. Nintendo created the 3 ½-inch format for its Famicom console (Famicom Disk Drive), although the unit never left the Japanese market.
Without a doubt, flexible disks changed the method of transferring files, documents, drivers, and updates. This technology was a pioneer in the world of portable storage units.
