The official and generic definition of cymatics speaks of "a section of vibratory modal phenomena", but in practice it can be something much more attractive, both technically and visually. A compelling proof appears in the images of scientist and photographer Linden Gledhill. By recording Faraday waves with a high-speed camera and the help of LED lights, Gledhill produces a sensational spectacle of light and movement using sound.
More than the high-speed camera, the equipment used by Gledhill is not that unusual. A small membrane is installed over a speaker. On the membrane, he places a dish containing water, and a series of LED lights illuminate its surface. A virtual tone generator feeds an amplifier connected to the speaker, allowing him to "oscillate" the water with specific frequencies. The liquid vibrates in this confined space, and the chaos of its surface reflects the LED lights creating incredible patterns.

Of course, all Gledhill has to do to modify his results is change the frequency and let the camera do the heavy lifting. I imagine using a high-speed camera like the i-SPEED 726 is not mandatory, but it makes a huge difference.
