During a manned mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is swept away by a fierce storm and left behind when the rest of the crew decides to evacuate the planet to return to Earth. Now Watney is trapped on the red planet, with only a few scarce supplies and his wits, which will be the key to his survival while he searches for a way to get in touch with NASA. The Martian is based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir. Filming began in late 2014 and took place in southern Jordan, Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, an iconic landscape used in movies like Lawrence of Arabia. The location has also been used previously for Mars landscapes, such as in the films Red Planet and The Last Days on Mars. This will be the fourth science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott after Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Prometheus (2012).
The Martian will also have scenes on Earth where the NASA team tries to find a way to help Watney despite the little incentive from the director of the institute, who will undoubtedly cause more than one problem for the rescue team. The cast includes Matt Damon (Mark Watney), along with Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, and Sean Bean, among others. Distributed by 20th Century Fox, the film will be directed by Ridley Scott. The Martian is scheduled for release on November 25, 2015 in theaters and can be enjoyed in 3D.
