It looks like Winamp is coming back. The last time we talked about a possible return was in September 2018, and since then the official page has served mainly as a download source for the old 5.8 beta. But everything changed in the last few days: the Winamp Twitter account announced that “something fabulous is happening” — and it’s nothing less than a new Winamp, with an updated logo and a profile that seeks not only users but also artists. Is a Spotify competitor on the way?
A legend in media players
Winamp. What can we add about a true legend among media players? Its adventure began in 1997, it became a de facto standard with the turn of the century, version 3 was a disaster, it joined the iPod craze with version 5.2, and the most recent version is 5.8.3660 beta, which Radionomy published in October 2018 after a leak. Many users decided to replace Winamp with more complete players, but it never disappeared. We have mirrors of its installers everywhere, an online version that works perfectly, and a digital museum with more than 65,000 skins available. Some of us still use the classic version out of nostalgia or the simple convenience of a dedicated player... but everything suggests that the return of Winamp is imminent.
How to register for the new Winamp beta
Visiting the official page (it’s still winamp.com, by the way) you’ll notice a complete change in its design, and most importantly... a new logo. The essence of the lightning bolt is still there, but as with all modern logos these days, it now has a minimalist look. However, that’s not the only thing that will be updated.
In addition to keeping the media playback features, it will also become “a unique space for creators and artists” where they can have control over their content, connect with their fans, and get “fairer income”. Nothing is confirmed yet, but this suggests that the new Winamp will look to trade a few blows with Spotify and other distribution services.
So, how can we test the new Winamp beta? Unfortunately, participation remains closed to the general public, so you’ll need to register with a name and an email on the main page, and get on the list. I imagine the beta won’t take long to appear, because no one is going to wait another three years.
