What makes the creatures contained by the Foundation so terrifying? Their strange nature? Their patience when hunting? The pleasure they feel when causing pain? Or simply their despair? Some of those beings do not seem to be at peace, and SCP-096 is a good example. Beyond its disturbing appearance, SCP-096 seems docile and weak, however, everything changes completely when someone sees its face...

SCP-096

Fragility and Weakness

Fragility. Weakness. The rejection upon seeing SCP-096 for the first time is immediate, but at the same time one cannot help but wonder what led it to that condition. A failed experiment? A curse? The Foundation does not know for sure. It only understands what it needs to contain this creature, knowledge that was paid with blood... as on so many other occasions. 'Deformed' is one of the words that define SCP-096. 2.38 meters tall, arms measuring one and a half meters, very little muscle mass, and a general picture of malnutrition is what the Foundation reports in its file. No one has been able to verify whether SCP-096 is blind or not, and the absence of higher brain functions raises doubts about its mental capacity and awareness. Pure instinct then? At least, that is what its behavior suggests when it goes crazy...

The Face: A Death Sentence

The Foundation keeps SCP-096 in a steel cube with 5 meters on each side, an environment robust enough to contain it in its docile state, but it must do a much more intense job by eliminating any photograph, recording, or video that could capture, even for a thousandth of a second, SCP-096's appearance. Only artistic interpretations of the creature are allowed to some extent due to their lack of effectiveness... and may providence help us if that ever changes. You see, SCP-096 enters a state of extreme agitation if someone sees its face. Immediately it covers it with its hands, a gesture that seems to mix pain and shame. SCP-096 will start screaming and crying, but there is something else: It will pursue the person who saw its face until it reaches them, regardless of distance or obstacles in its way.

At that point, SCP-096 will do nothing else but dismember its target, tearing off arms, legs, internal organs, and the head. The Foundation refuses to confirm it, but we can say with some certainty that SCP-096 devours its victim completely, leaving no traces. Its jaw opens four times more than a normal human's, so it has no problem processing the... larger pieces. SCP-096 has been at the center of several high-profile breaches, and for now, the Foundation knows no method, material, or weapon capable of preventing SCP-096 from annihilating its victim. Only after having killed it, it will return to its previous state of docility.

Experiments and Debate

The experiments conducted by the Foundation to evaluate SCP-096's detection were conclusive, and the latent risk of a "chain reaction" associated with an accidental exposure of its image led several scientists to conclude that must be destroyed, but some minds in the Foundation believe it could have utility as a weapon...
