In a remote, classified area near Lake Baikal in Russia, the Foundation is struggling to contain an infection. And when I say "infection," don't think of viruses or bacteria. What "lives" there is worse than death itself. This infection is highly contagious, incurable, and turns its victims into terrifying monsters. But there's more: those creatures will stop at nothing to spread their horror and turn our world... into theirs.
It all began with the disappearance of a few farmers in the region. Within 72 hours, local police, regional police, and a government agent went missing too. A small military unit was sent in, but what they found made them retreat immediately, and the authorities gave the Foundation the green light to investigate. A perimeter was quickly established under the pretext of "military maneuvers," and so far it's been the most effective way to "contain" SCP-610. The Foundation's security protocol leaves no room for doubt: kill and burn everything that leaves the area. Any living thing that has come into contact with SCP-610 is considered "expendable" and is to be exterminated at once. So... what exactly is SCP-610? Why does it demand such a brutal and decisive response?
The Infection Takes Hold
One of the worst things about SCP-610 is that it doesn't seem dangerous at first. Just a skin infection causing a rash, itching, and sensitivity... but by then it's already too late. The infection spreads, and within three hours, the victim is covered in patches that look like scar tissue. After five hours, the infected person is completely consumed. The Foundation has found that exposure to high temperatures drastically accelerates the infection, with cases reaching that state in under five minutes. But the horror is just beginning.
Awakening of the Flesh
After a brief disruption of vital functions, the infected "revive" in the most disturbing way possible: their scar tissue begins to grow and move on its own. Everything human about them disappears, replaced by extra appendages, arms, and legs. The head loses its shape, becoming longer or wider, and other parts of the body split open to allow more tissue to emerge.
The Rooted Ones
Under certain conditions the Foundation hasn't fully identified, some infected individuals stop moving and stay put, essentially "taking root." From that point, the victim's flesh keeps growing, consuming everything in its path. Any infected who haven't yet turned into tissue will try to seek help, but if they encounter someone without signs of SCP-610, they attack with extreme aggression to infect them. With permission from Russian authorities, the Foundation has sent expeditions into SCP-610's territory. The losses in personnel and equipment have been significant, but they've learned something that could change everything: SCP-610 is not just random growth. There's something intelligent inside... and it's organizing.
