A group of children lost in the forest. An idea that your classic horror movies have explored and exploited to exhaustion, but if you're trapped here with me, you know very well that things work differently in the Foundation. In your hands you have the file belonging to SCP-899. A "psychic and telekinetic phenomenon" according to the skulls that wrote it, expressions that make them feel safer and more confident... but I can only offer you the truth: They are more numerous every time, and they are furious..

Containment

I admit the Foundation did a more or less decent job containing SCP-899. It first manifested in a specific region of Rocky Mountain National Park, north of Colorado. The phenomenon cannot move more than five meters from any standing living tree, a detail that gave Foundation elements the possibility to create a firewall space that serves as a barrier. Agents stationed in three service cabins across the perimeter are responsible for keeping hikers away, and if necessary, erasing their memory with amnesiacs. Why? For the children, of course.

The Ghost Children

SCP-899 manifests in our world as groups of ghost children. Testimonies from several travelers agree that the children are hostile, chasing, harassing, and throwing rocks at those who pass through the area. Without a defined form, it's impossible to know the age or gender of the children, but one thing is certain: If the intruder takes too long to leave, they will physically attack. The result of that attack is very strange: The adult loses all memories prior to the onset of puberty, a process that completely modifies their personality. Drive and curiosity disappear, any expression of humor is rejected, and they become very impatient with the little ones.

But there's more. There is always more in the Foundation, don't forget it. SCP-899 reacts differently to children. Any preadolescent young person who comes into contact with one of the entities will physically disappear, while the rest absorb certain characteristics of the lost child's appearance. Now, I'm afraid I can't tell you what happens to those adolescents who haven't fully matured past puberty. The Foundation took care of erasing every last detail, a subtle way of indicating that everything ends badly.

The Experiment

Ten years ago, the Foundation decided to conduct an experiment: Expose SCP-899's children to the effect of another SCP, designated 573. SCP-573 is a flute made of bone, and any child who hears its music enters a highly receptive state, obeying any order. At first, the experiment was a success, and the children retreated without incident... but I imagine you already know what happened, right? Using the flute had consequences, and from a certain point of view, SCP-899 evolved. Into what? There is only one visual record available:

The Evolution

What you just saw is SCP-899-1. This variant deviated from traditional behavior and immediately attacked one of the Foundation doctors, causing multiple cuts and bite wounds on the neck, arm, and the upper part of one of his thighs. Despite physical contact, the doctor was able to retain memories of his youth, but it's evident that 'stealing childhood' from victims is no longer enough: The intent is to kill. A week later, instances of SCP-899-1 grew in number, and their desire for conflict also spread to normal SCP-899 entities. One of the cabins on the northern border was set on fire by SCP-899-1, causing the death of an agent.

The only good news for the Foundation is that SCP-899-1 can be deterred in the same way as previous entities, but the use of SCP-573 has been prohibited. The Foundation's mistake in crossing SCPs without measuring consequences may have awakened a beast impossible to appease...
