Those who follow my weekly galleries (especially the Animated Dump) have already come across some work by Ben Avlis, this self-taught artist from Massachusetts (United States). His works have gone viral in recent days, filling every corner of the web. There are plenty of reasons for all the fame the artist is enjoying these days: his illustrations mutate with just unfolding a piece of paper, going from adorable and colorful little drawings to nightmareish evil spawns.
The technique is similar to that of those pop-up books, which we have talked about in past days: a folded drawing that, when stretched, shows what lies beneath. And in the case of Ben's animated illustrations, what lies beneath is the most primal horror. Impossible figures that seem to stretch out to suck our souls.
Besides these terrifying little things, Ben owns the MiLLBiLLY ART Studio, a place he uses to sell t-shirts and prints of his drawings, as well as originals of his work. The artist also has an Instagram account where you can find these and many of his other illustrations, which are not always animated but are psychedelic.
