The fastest electric RC plane
"The fastest" is too tempting a record. With certain exceptions, everyone wants to set a mark. The fastest car, the fastest plane, the fastest computer... the need to break limits is everywhere, and secondary aspects tend to be irrelevant. For example, scale. That takes us to the world of RC, where enthusiasts pursue multiple goals. Some focus on the accuracy of the models, others on technical features, and then there are those who seek pure speed. A perfect example of that is the latest world record break among electric RC planes:
If this demon flying at 427 km/h and making that spectacular sound doesn't convince you, nothing will. The person behind the YouTube channel 'OMEGOOLIEBIRD' doesn't say much about himself, but the descriptions of his videos always share something juicy. The plane in question is a Vasamodel Fusion, with a price ranging from 325 to 350 euros. The Leopard LBP3674 motor costs around 75 euros, the electronic speed controller adds 40-45 dollars, and personally I was very impressed by the Turnigy 3,000 mAh battery. This variant has been optimized with graphene, weighs almost 600 grams, and the plane pushes it to the limit. In the test with multimeter and clamp ammeter, the numbers are scary: 315A peak at 20V gives 6,300 watts.
On the FPV side, we find a Runcam Micro Swift 2 camera, a MyFlyDream Telefly OSD, a Runcam Split Mini for HD video from the plane (soon to share the feed), and a simple GoPro Hero 3 Black on the ground. Time is on this pilot's side. With more powerful and lighter batteries, he will surely be able to keep breaking records in the future, as long as he focuses his efforts on electric planes. After all, jet models already smashed the 700 km/h mark...
