The first attempts by Nvidia's neural networks to create fake portraits had obvious symmetry errors and other very evident details, but a new study published by company researchers confirms that through a special technique based on “style transfer,” an artificial intelligence can combine multiple features and pour them into target faces, essentially creating people from nothing.

We also shouldn't forget “El Hijo del Carnicero”, the first work of a neural network recognized with an international prize. This is not the first time these developments have intervened in the art world, and it definitely won't be the last, but there are other projects out there with different priorities. One of them is realism. When an artificial intelligence does something, it's not that hard to detect its intervention. However, while we waste time, those networks don't stop training. With more powerful hardware at their disposal, researchers have achieved surprising and chilling things at the same time. If you don't believe me, look at this:
A study published by Tero Karras, Samuli Laine, and Timo Aila explains the advantages of a new training and image generation system based on style transfer. A generative adversarial network creates images by mimicking real photos. The problem is that they don't offer much control over the final images. The new Nvidia generator learned to automatically separate different aspects of the original photos without supervision, and once training is complete, the operators can combine those aspects as they wish, achieving greater flexibility in the results. The artificial intelligence interprets each image as a collection of “styles” (fine, medium, and coarse), to which multiple levels of noise and strength are added.
And it's not limited to faces! Cars, interiors, and even cats (!) are within reach of the neural network. Let's think about it for a moment: A person who doesn't exist, driving a car that doesn't exist, with a house that doesn't exist, a bedroom that doesn't exist, and pets that don't exist. If someone decides to develop a frontend, we could create entire lives with a couple of clicks. Probably a matter of time.
