It is said that "a picture is worth a thousand words," but if we try to imagine some, the most likely answers are the date and the place. So why not turn it into a game? That is exactly what TimeGuessr offers: your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to look at five photographs, place each shot in time and space, and score as many points as possible.
Last year we talked about Framed, a Wordle variant designed for movie lovers. The idea is to observe different scenes and try to identify the movie, with a maximum of six attempts. Now, how about playing with real photographs instead of isolated frames? I mean historical events and famous images where you have to guess two details: the place where they were taken, and the year. TimeGuessr: A History and Geography Game with Famous Photographs
Despite what its name suggests, there is no time limit in TimeGuessr. The images usually have very important clues to identify the region in question (signs, phone numbers, acronyms, legends, etc.), and the rest is trying to get as close as possible to the correct year. This is when our knowledge of history should shine. An example (and by extension, one of the solutions) shows an old photograph of the New York Public Library in which books are requested for soldiers at the front. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, so that photograph cannot go beyond 1918.
The score is calculated with a maximum of 10,000 points per round, divided into 5,000 for the year and 5,000 for the location. In general, any total above 30,000 points is more than acceptable. TimeGuessr has a certain tolerance margin, but don't be surprised to see 0 points when the difference in years is too large. Finally, remember that you can enlarge the map and zoom in on the photos using the mouse wheel.
