Spreadsheets on mobile devices. The idea is not exactly new, to say the least, but it always ends the same way: turned into a nightmare for the user. The problem is that the main programs have features that can only be fully used on the desktop. However, the Tinysheet project offers minimalist spreadsheets for mobile that adapt perfectly to smaller screens.
One of the first spreadsheets I saw on mobile devices was through the old Nokia Communicator series at the beginning of the century. Shortly after, the first phones with Pocket PC / Windows Mobile appeared, and Excel was part of the application package. Personally, I can only say that the overall experience was horrible. Too many ideas taken from the desktop, compressed onto tiny screens.
Twenty years and several operating systems later, the profile of mobile devices has completely changed. iOS and Android rule the universe, phones with small screens are an endangered species, hybrids and foldables are everywhere, and the popularity of webapps has exploded. Fortunately, spreadsheets seem to have found a place among all this, and that is thanks to the Tinysheet project, with minimalist spreadsheets for mobile.
Tinysheet: Create minimalist mobile spreadsheets in seconds
Tinysheet has been on the market for a couple of years, but it has never lost sight of its goal. Many users end up opening Excel to perform basic calculations, and when they get their results, they don't even save the formula because it's not that important. It's uncomfortable, inefficient, and the alternatives are as "big" as Excel.
Tinysheet points in the opposite direction: ten rows, two columns, basic equations, support for titles and comments. That's all. If you want to share the sheet with someone or insert a copy on your website, you can tap the Share command, and there choose the Copy Link option, or duplicate the code with Embed. Another interesting option is to send the spreadsheet directly to Twitter with the Tweet command.
If you want to keep Tinysheet as a more permanent spreadsheet on your devices, you can always save the custom URL under favorites in your browser, but it's clear from the start that it has another dynamic, more casual if you will. Use, discard, and create a new one.
