We saw the numbers of the GeForce GTX 1080, and we were truly impressed. Then we studied the performance of its smaller sisters, and the word that came to mind was "fabulous". But Nvidia didn't go to sleep. Less than three months later, the green giant from Santa Clara drops a bombshell with its new Nvidia Titan X, and although we don't have benchmarks yet, it's already positioned 20-30 percent above the GTX 1080.
Virtual reality and 4K video are already among us. Placing an ever-increasing number of pixels on screen at a minimum speed of 60 frames per second is reason enough to convince manufacturers to launch more powerful products, however, the last word always belongs to the user. Is there a ceiling on graphics cards? The "budget factor" was, is, and will be a fundamental barrier in accessing hardware of this type, but if we remove that component from the equation, the so-called "high-end" does not tire of pulverizing rules. In mid-May, Nvidia introduced its GeForce GTX 1080, the first under the Pascal architecture. Soon after, the 1070 and the 1060 followed, with almost equally chilling specifications. Now, Nvidia decided to go in the other direction... and what it placed on the table is the Titan X.
I understand the name can lead to confusion. After all, there is already a "GTX Titan X" that was launched in March 2015, but the new graphics card is "Nvidia Titan X", without GTX or GeForce. Some secondary details about its hardware still need to be confirmed, but we do know that the Titan X will have a total of 12GB of GDDR5X RAM (the same type of memory as the GTX 1080), 12 billion transistors, a 384-bit bus, 3,584 CUDA cores, a frequency of 1,417 MHz with a boost mode of 1,533 MHz, and the same TDP as previous Titans, 250 watts. If we have to put this in terms of bandwidth, the new memory and the bus change speak of about 480 gigabytes per second.
The Nvidia Titan X will be available starting August 2nd only through Nvidia's official portal, so we won't see variants distributed by its main partners, but it was confirmed that OEMs will be able to include the card in their high-end computers. As expected, the generational change in relation to previous models of the Titan series gives Nvidia the perfect excuse to set the price of the new Titan X at $1,200. Dreaming costs nothing.
